Key Ideas.

CHALLENGE YOUR BRAIN.

Expression of conflict of interests: the workings of the 84 billion neurons (and equivalent of the supporting glia cells) in the brain is my professional interest and the income from work substantially pays the bills. So please be warned I might appear passionate and biased as I extoll the virtues of the potential of the human brain. There is just so much to write about the mysterious cheesy substance that floats about in the skull.

In any writing endevour there is a serious mental challenge knowing what to begin with, constructing the central theme of the story, and how to tailor the climactic end. There could be a thousand ways to express my own journey after forty years of studying the two cerebral hemispheres, the four lobes, the limbic (emotional systems), infinite networks, trillions of synapses, hundreds of pathologies; or even speculating how and where and why the brain hosts three main psychological defenses: denial, rationalization and projection.

So on the day before writing about stimulating the brain networks, and developing a life long habit of learning, I had a little fun, and tested myself thus: when I walked into my library of five thousand books plus, the first book to catch my eye, would be the center of discussion around the forth component of the The Adventures in Wellness prescription: Brain Challenges.

It was Frames of Mind by Howard Gardner, second edition. One of my favorite reads, and I consider the educationist, Gardner, of Harvard breeding, to be one of the great thought leaders of late twentieth century around issues of intelligences, developmental psychology and education - both learning and teaching.

Gardner argues for a broader dimensional approach to intelligence as opposed to a global unit to defining human intelligence, the IQ. There is certainly lots of noise around this argument and is far from settled. However, as a guide to two critical themes in my daily work and writings – a). stress management (specifically rest from core daily tasks) and b) neuroplasticity enhancement, a fundamental appreciation and understanding of each of the nine proposed intelligences forms a scaffolding for you to structure your daily adventures in brain challenges. Work on one, by resting the others; then move to the next.

Let me begin by listing the nine types of multiple Intelligences for you to get a taste of the pluri-potential of your brain
1). Mathematical-Logical
2). Linguistic
3). Musical
4). Naturalistic
5). Spatial
6). Body-Kinesthetic
7). Interpersonal
8). Intrapersonal
9). Existential (This network is the most controversial, and often left out by some critics. I don't. )
